At Edna G. Olds Academy, we are committed to building a greener, cleaner and more sustainable future for our children.

Our Climate Action Plan sets out how we will protect the environment, reduce our carbon footprint and empower pupils to become confident, responsible global citizens.

What is a Climate Action Plan?

A Climate Action Plan is a clear, practical roadmap that helps our school reduce its impact on the environment. It guides the actions we take—from saving energy and reducing waste to improving biodiversity and teaching children about climate change.

The Government has asked all schools to have a Climate Action Plan in place by 2025. Our plan was created together with pupils, staff, school leaders, governors and our Eco and Climate Ambassadors, ensuring that the whole school community has a voice.

Why this work matters

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing young people today. At Edna G. Olds Academy, our ethos and twelve core values inspire pupils to show respect, responsibility, curiosity and care for the world around them. Sustainability is woven throughout our curriculum and linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, helping pupils learn to think globally and act locally.

Although, we are located in an urban environment, our children regularly explore local green spaces, take part in outdoor learning and study topics that help them understand and appreciate the natural world. By taking purposeful action, we support children’s wellbeing, build resilience and encourage hope for the future.

Our Climate Action Plan focuses on five key areas which are listed below.

1. Decarbonisation

We aim to reduce our carbon emissions and work towards becoming a net-zero school by 2030. This includes:

  • Cutting energy use
  • Reducing waste
  • Encouraging greener travel
  • Improving water efficiency
  • Making sustainable choices in what we buy.

  • Increasing shade
  • Planting climate-resilient plants
  • Installing water-saving systems
  • Creating outdoor learning spaces.

What we’ve already achieved

We are proud of the steps we’ve taken so far, including:

  • Moving to more digital resources to reduce paper use
  • Establishing recycling systems in every classroom
  • Running energy-saving initiatives with our Climate Ambassadors
  • Walking to local trips to cut carbon emissions
  • Creating Eco and Environment Councils to give pupils leadership roles.

These successes show what is possible when our whole school works together.

How we will deliver our plan

This is a whole-school effort. Pupils, teachers, families, governors and community partners will all play a part. We will:

  • Set clear targets each year
  • Review our plan every two years
  • Measure our progress
  • Celebrate achievements
  • Continue to build partnerships with local organisations.

Through regular monitoring and shared responsibility, we will stay on track and make meaningful, lasting change.

Our promise to our pupils, community and to the planet

Our Climate Action Plan is more than a document—it’s our promise. A promise to our pupils, to our community and to the planet.

By taking action now, we are helping to create:

  • A healthier environment
  • A more sustainable school
  • Empowered children who understand their role in shaping the future.
